I only recently started using a Macbook, but during my years as a PC and laptop user, my first concern was always to have the latest and best antivirus software installed and updated. A lot of people claim they do not like it because the program itself takes up a lot of memory and – they say – makes the computer run sluggishly. Well, I dished out the big dollars when I could, to always have the latest and most well-rounded version of Norton. PCs always seem to slowly get sluggish over time anyway, for reasons that they layperson never understands.

Even when we defragment the hard drive, when we tune it up, when we scan it periodically for viruses, worms and Trojans, and even if we delete e-mails and ugly pictures to free up the memory, the PC always slows down eventually.

I never noticed this really, until I switched to a Mac, and then I felt it was lightning-fast compared to the fastest PC I had ever owned before.

I then gave my old laptop to my daughter so she could use it to game on the Internet and listen to music on my Itunes library. I could not afford to update the Norton Antivirus software, so I uninstalled it, and installed a trial (free) version of a very common Antivirus software that many people I know use.

The result: one month after uninstalling Norton, the laptop stopped working since it was overly infected with viruses. So, it would have been worth paying the bucks to renew my Norton subscription, since it was cheaper than getting a new computer. Better safe, than sorry!
